Vickery Holman support ROC charity at Gig rowing event

Robert Owen Communities (ROC), a charity which supports people with learning disabilities, and property consultants Vickery Holman, linked up recently to mark their 25th anniversaries in an inclusive way.

As part of their annual gig rowing event at the Watersports Centre in Falmouth, Vickery Holman invited some of the more intrepid people ROC support to take part in this exciting and challenging activity.

Neil Stubbs, commercial property agent at Vickery Holman’s Truro office said: ‘Having co-sponsored The ROC 5K charity fun run in Truro in June, the firm saw the opportunity to involve ROC and some of the people they support in our annual gig rowing event. Gig Rowing is a demanding sport in terms of co-ordination, rhythm and team work and a great way to get out on the water. We were delighted they enjoyed themselves so much and made such good progress, after such a positive experience we may well involve other charities in this way in future.’

Paul Deakin, ROC’s Cornwall manager, said: ‘I am over the moon with the approach of Neil and his colleagues. They were co-operative, safe, inclusive - and patient - and enabled our team of novices to improve tremendously over the time they were on the water. Two people would very much like to go gig rowing again and for a longer period of time.’

Paul continued: ‘Gig rowing proved to be a wonderful expression of inclusion - there are many others. We would like to encourage the involvement of other businesses in joint social sports activities such as pool, ten pin and golf football. These are all excellent and sustainable ways to promote inclusion. As Neil and his colleagues found, they can provide ideal settings for company teams to successfully engage with people who have learning disabilities.’
