Smaller Housebuilders – Britain Needs You!
The Government’s ambition to build 1.5m new homes across the UK is a challenge and nowhere more so than in the SW where the population is expected to grow by 6.5% over next 10 years, with Cornwall expected to grow by 20% by 2050. Every part of the housebuilding industry will need to up its game and play its part if these targets are to be met.
Whilst the national house builders, Housing Authorities, Planning Authorities and Registered Providers are the big influencers, there is a place for smaller house builders/developers. Smaller developers have a reputation for quality and flexibility in their housebuilding but find it difficult to cope with the bureaucracy of the current planning regime. One hopes that the Government finds a way to ease the planning process and reduce the costs and risks of going from concept to foundation.
In Cornwall there is a consortium of small and medium sized house builders, the Private Developers’ Forum, that is sharing knowledge and experience to engage with Cornwall Council, the local Housing and Planning Authority, to find ways to harness their enthusiasm and skills to build more houses. These discussions include shaping the emerging Local (development) Plan and development control management.
If you are a small or medium sized housebuilder in Cornwall you should join the Forum by contacting Greg Oldrieve [email protected].
